The Centre has been providing supervision training both as open and bespoke courses for organisations across the helping professions since 1979. These include social services departments, hospitals, drug and alcohol treatment centres, clinical psychology departments, clergy, Relate, schools, counselling and psychotherapy organisations. The rich mixture of participants with different backgrounds and orientations that attend the courses helps to build an environment that challenges assumptions as well as providing a supportive community for learning.

The Centre staff have published widely in the field including Supervision in the Helping Professions (4th edition 2012) by Peter Hawkins and Robin Shohet and the series in context (see books). Supervision in the Helping Professions is still an Open University best seller and has been translated into Czech, Swedish, Japanese and Greek. The courses have now been run in a number of countries including New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa and 15 years ago we introduced the supervision certificate. Besides being part of the certificate course and training as a supervisor the Core, Therapeutic and Group supervision courses are also stand alone courses which have provided and continue to provide CPD and an opportunity to develop oneself as a supervisee.

Our courses and our work developed out of our passion for wanting our own and other people’s work places to be sources of nourishment, support, ongoing learning and enjoyment. Research has shown that meaningful work is a major contribution to a person’s well-being. We see supervision as a very important element in this. The Centre has expanded the number of courses available from the original Core course. All reflect our basic commitment to helping to create a learning environment for individuals, teams and organisations.

This is modular programme which can be take as a full certificate programme, (see Certificate in Supervision in the menu), or as stand alone courses. Participants who have trained in supervision elsewhere often like to take one or more of the courses; the courses also provide excellent CPD and for those who have completed our certificate a possibility of repeating a course at a cost of £150 if the course is not fully booked.
